Korean sunscreens: why they are superior
Why Korean SPFs have better texture, finish and protection than Western ones. Beauty of Joseon, Biore, Canmake and how to choose yours.
Sunscreen is the skincare product with the most evidence on the planet. More than retinol, more than vitamin C, more than any $200 serum. A 2021 meta-analysis in the British Journal of Dermatology estimated that daily SPF use reduces photoaging by 80% and melanoma risk by 50%. Nothing in cosmetics comes close to those numbers.
The problem was never the evidence. It was the user experience. Western sunscreens have traditionally been heavy, leave a white cast, sting the eyes and leave a greasy finish that makes it impossible to apply makeup over. The result: people don't use them.
Korea solved that problem.
Why Korean SPFs are different
Formulation philosophy
In the West, sunscreen is formulated as a shield: the function is to block. Texture, finish and sensoriality are secondary.
In Korea, SPF is the final step of a 5-10 step skincare routine. If the sunscreen ruins everything before it (pilling, white residue, heaviness), nobody uses it. That's why the Korean industry invested decades in solving texture without sacrificing protection.
Asian UV filters
Cosmetic regulation in Asia (KFDA, Japanese PMDA) approves UV filters that Europe and the US haven't yet adopted or were slow to approve:
- Tinosorb S Plus. broad-spectrum UVA/UVB filter
- Uvinul A Plus. potent UVA, cosmetically elegant
- Parsol SLX. avobenzone stabilizer
- Encapsulated filters. less systemic penetration, less irritation
The result: equivalent or superior protection with textures that feel like a light moisturizer.
The PA++++ standard
While the West measures UVA protection with "broad spectrum" (binary: yes or no), Asia uses the PA system (Protection grade of UVA):
| Grade | UVA Protection | Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| PA+ | Some protection | Minimum |
| PA++ | Moderate | Acceptable |
| PA+++ | High | Good |
| PA++++ | Extreme | The K-Beauty standard |
PA++++ means the sunscreen offers a PPD (Persistent Pigment Darkening) above 16. Most premium Korean SPFs are PA++++.

How to choose your Korean SPF
By skin type
- Oily: Biore UV Aqua Rich (natural-matte finish) or Canmake Mermaid UV Gel (shine control)
- Dry: Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun (moisturizing, dewy finish)
- Sensitive: Purito Daily Go-To Sunscreen (centella, fragrance-free)
- Combination: Missha All Around Safe Block Essence Sun (balanced)
By use case
- Under makeup: Beauty of Joseon (perfect base, no pilling)
- Sports/water: Biore UV (water and sweat resistant)
- Reapplication over makeup: SPF stick or cushion (Holika Holika, COSRX)
- Darker skin tones: Look for SPF without white cast (all Asian chemical filters)
The two-finger rule
The correct amount of SPF for the face is two lines of product along the index and middle fingers (the "two finger rule" popularized by dermatologist Dr. Sam Bunting). This equals ~1/4 teaspoon, which is the amount used in laboratory tests to certify the SPF.
With less product, an SPF 50 behaves like an SPF 15.
Common mistakes
1. Not reapplying
SPF doesn't last all day. Protection decays with time, sweat and friction. Reapply every 2 hours if you're outdoors. Korean SPF sticks and cushions make this easy over makeup.
2. Trusting makeup SPF
A foundation with SPF 30 applied in normal makeup quantity gives a real SPF of ~5. Makeup with SPF is a complement, not a substitute.
3. Not using SPF indoors
UVA rays pass through windows. If you work next to a window, you need SPF. It sounds extreme, but the evidence for photoaging from indirect exposure is solid.
4. Skipping SPF because "it's summer" or "I have dark skin"
High phototype reduces the risk of sunburn, not photoaging or DNA damage. All phototypes benefit from daily SPF.
