Niacinamide: the complete guide to the active your skin needs
What niacinamide is, what it does, how to use it, and what to pair it with. Best serums (COSRX, Anua, The Ordinary, Ondo), routines, and common mistakes.
Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is the most versatile active in modern skincare. It controls sebum, reduces pores, improves skin tone, strengthens the barrier, calms redness, and is compatible with everything. No other ingredient does so many things with so little irritation.
This is not hype. It is documented pharmacology. More than 50 clinical trials in humans, decades of dermatological use, and a safety profile that allows it to be used during pregnancy, on sensitive skin, and alongside any other active.
What is niacinamide
Niacinamide (nicotinamide) is the amide form of vitamin B3 (niacin). It is not the same as niacin: niacinamide does not cause flushing (redness) and has superior topical properties for the skin.
It is a precursor of NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), the most important coenzyme in cellular metabolism. Every cell in your body needs NAD+ to produce energy. With age, NAD+ levels decline. Topical niacinamide partially restores NAD+ levels in skin cells.
What niacinamide does
| Function | Mechanism | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Reduces sebum | Inhibits sebaceous lipid production | Strong (Draelos 2006) |
| Minimizes pores | Normalizes follicular lining | Moderate-strong |
| Improves tone/dark spots | Inhibits melanosome transfer to keratinocytes | Strong (Hakozaki 2002) |
| Strengthens barrier | Stimulates ceramide and fatty acid synthesis | Strong (Tanno 2000) |
| Reduces redness | Anti-inflammatory (inhibits IL-8, TNF-α) | Strong |
| Mild anti-wrinkle | Stimulates collagen and elastin | Moderate |
| Antioxidant | Precursor of NADPH (glutathione recycling) | Strong |
Scientific evidence
Draelos et al., 2006 (Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy): 2% niacinamide reduced sebum production and oily appearance of the skin after 4 weeks. The sebum secretion rate decreased by 23%.
Hakozaki et al., 2002 (British Journal of Dermatology): 5% niacinamide reduced hyperpigmentation and improved skin tone in Japanese women after 8 weeks. The mechanism: inhibition of melanosome transfer from melanocytes to keratinocytes. It does not inhibit melanin itself, but its distribution.
Tanno et al., 2000 (British Journal of Dermatology): Topical niacinamide stimulated the synthesis of ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids in the stratum corneum, improving barrier function and reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
Gehring, 2004 (International Journal of Cosmetic Science): Review of topical niacinamide at concentrations of 2-5%. Confirms effects on sebum, pigmentation, barrier, fine wrinkles, and redness. Excellent safety profile even on sensitive skin.
“Niacinamide is probably the cosmetic ingredient with the best efficacy-to-tolerance ratio in existence. It works on virtually all skin types, is compatible with all actives, and has solid evidence for at least 5 different indications. It is the closest thing to a 'universal ingredient' that we have in cosmetic dermatology.”
Concentration: how much do you need
| Concentration | Effect | For whom |
|---|---|---|
| 2% | Sebum control, barrier | Sensitive skin, beginners |
| 4-5% | Tone, dark spots, pores, anti-wrinkle | Most skin types |
| 10% | Maximum sebum and pore control | Resistant oily skin |
| 15-20% | Aggressive, may irritate | Only very oily and tolerant skin |
The optimal concentration is 5%. More than 5% has not demonstrated significantly superior benefits in comparative studies, but it does increase the risk of irritation. Formulas at 10-20% are for skin that tolerates well and seeks maximum sebum control.

Niacinamide and vitamin C: you can combine them
The most persistent myth in skincare: "niacinamide and vitamin C cannot be mixed." This is false.
Where the myth comes from
A 1963 study showed that niacinamide and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) can form a yellow complex (niacin ascorbate) when heated together in a test tube at pH 3.8. This lab data became internet dogma.
Why it does not apply to skincare
- The complex forms at temperatures far higher than that of human skin
- Modern vitamin C formulas (derivatives like ascorbyl glucoside) do not have this issue
- Even with pure L-ascorbic acid, complex formation on the skin is minimal and does not reduce efficacy
Snyder & Kumar, 2020 (Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology): Confirmed that the combination is safe and effective. The two complement each other: vitamin C is an antioxidant + stimulates collagen; niacinamide is anti-inflammatory + repairs the barrier.
How to combine them: vitamin C first (lower pH), wait 1-2 minutes, niacinamide after. Or vitamin C in the morning, niacinamide at night. Both options work.
What to combine with (and what not)
Winning combinations
| Combination | Synergy | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Niacinamide + retinol | Niacinamide calms retinol irritation | Anti-aging without irritation |
| Niacinamide + vitamin C | Antioxidant + barrier repair | Luminosity + protection |
| Niacinamide + hyaluronic acid | Barrier + hydration | Hydrated and protected skin |
| Niacinamide + centella | Dual anti-inflammatory | Reactive skin, rosacea |
| Niacinamide + BHA | Sebum control + exfoliation | Oily acne-prone skin |
| Niacinamide + SPF | Barrier + UV protection | Complete morning routine |
Caution
| Combination | Problem | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Niacinamide + concentrated AHA/BHA | Low pH may reduce efficacy | Wait 15-20 min between them |
| Niacinamide 10%+ on sensitive skin | Possible irritation from high concentration | Start with 2-5% |
There are no real incompatibilities. Only timing and concentration adjustments.
Niacinamide during pregnancy
Topical niacinamide is safe during pregnancy. It is one of the few anti-aging actives that can be used without restriction during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Actives you CANNOT use during pregnancy: retinol, retinoids, salicylic acid (BHA) at high concentration, hydroquinone.
Actives you CAN use: niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, centella, azelaic acid.
Niacinamide is especially useful during pregnancy because it combats gestational hyperpigmentation (melasma) safely.

Niacinamide for oily skin and pores
If your main concern is sebum and enlarged pores, niacinamide is your base active. Unlike BHA (which cleans pores from within), niacinamide reduces sebum production at the source. They are complementary.
Oily skin protocol:
- Morning: 10% niacinamide + SPF
- Night: BHA (COSRX Blackhead Power) 2-3 times/week + niacinamide on the other nights
- Expected result: visible reduction of shine and pores in 4-6 weeks
Niacinamide for dark spots and uneven tone
For hyperpigmentation, niacinamide does not bleach. It inhibits the transfer of melanosomes to keratinocytes. The effect is gradual and cumulative.
Anti-dark spot protocol:
- Anua Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4% is the most potent combination available without prescription
- Combine with vitamin C in the morning for antioxidant + depigmenting effect
- SPF 50 mandatory (without sun protection, no anti-dark spot treatment works)
- Expected result: visible improvement in tone in 8-12 weeks
Common mistakes
1. Starting with a high concentration
If you have never used niacinamide, do not start with 15-20%. Begin with 5% for 2 weeks. If your skin tolerates it without redness or breakouts, move up to 10%.
2. Confusing niacinamide with niacin
Niacin (nicotinic acid) causes facial flushing (redness, warmth, itching). Niacinamide (nicotinamide) does not. They are different forms of vitamin B3. Check the product INCI list.
3. Expecting results in 1 week
Niacinamide for sebum takes 2-4 weeks. For dark spots, 8-12 weeks. For wrinkles, 12+ weeks. It is a consistency game.
4. Pilling with The Ordinary
The Ordinary's Niacinamide 10% has a texture that can pill (form little balls) when combined with other products. Solution: apply on damp skin, or switch to COSRX/Anua which have more cosmetically elegant textures.
5. Using only niacinamide for severe acne
Niacinamide reduces sebum and inflammation, but it is not an acne treatment. For moderate-to-severe acne, see a dermatologist. Niacinamide is a complement, not a primary treatment.
