What Is WHOOP?

WHOOP is a performance wearable focused on three pillars: training load (strain), recovery and sleep. Unlike other devices, WHOOP has no screen — all information is consumed through the app. It's a pure physiological data sensor.

WHOOP 5.0 (launched late 2025) is the fifth generation, with significant improvements in sensors, size and battery life.

Business Model: Subscription Only

This is the most confusing part. You don't buy WHOOP — you subscribe:

| Plan | Price | Includes | |---|---|---| | Monthly | $30/mo | WHOOP 5.0 band + full app | | Annual | $24/mo | Band + app (20% savings) | | 24 months | $20/mo | Best per-month price |

The band is "free" with your subscription. Cancel and you return the device. If you're upgrading from WHOOP 4.0, the 5.0 upgrade is free.

Key Specifications

| Feature | Detail | |---|---| | Sensors | PPG 5 LEDs, accelerometer, gyroscope, temperature, pulse ox, EDA (electrodermal activity) | | Battery | 5–7 days | | Water resistance | IP68 (shower/swimming) | | Weight | 25g (sensor only) | | Connectivity | Bluetooth 5.3 | | Charging | Wireless, slide-on battery pack |

Strain: The Killer Metric

The Strain Score (0–21) measures cumulative cardiovascular load throughout the day. Every activity — from a workout to a stressful meeting — adds strain. WHOOP auto-detects activities without you starting them.

The power move: WHOOP crosses your daily strain with your morning recovery to recommend optimal load. If your recovery is at 45%, it suggests an easy day. At 90%, you can push hard.

How It Works

Based on:

  • Continuous heart rate (24/7)
  • Time in HR zones
  • Duration and intensity of activities
  • HRV and prior recovery state

Recovery Score

Every morning, WHOOP calculates your Recovery Score (0–100%):

  • 0–33% (red): your body needs rest. Avoid intense training.
  • 34–66% (yellow): partial recovery. Moderate training is fine.
  • 67–100% (green): full recovery. Push day.

Based on: overnight HRV, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, SpO2 and sleep quality.

Sleep Tracking

WHOOP tracks sleep automatically (no manual start needed):

  • Stages: light, deep, REM, awake
  • Sleep Need: hours needed based on strain, sleep debt and baseline
  • Sleep Performance: % of need met (target: >85%)
  • Sleep Coach: tells you what time to go to bed to hit peak performance tomorrow

Who Is WHOOP For?

WHOOP is ideal for:

  • Athletes training 4–6x/week who need load management
  • CrossFitters and high-intensity athletes
  • Biohackers who prioritise recovery and strain over daily smartwatch features
  • People who want an invisible wearable (no screen, discreet)

NOT for you if:

  • You want to see the time or notifications (get an Apple Watch)
  • Sleep is your only priority (Oura Ring is better and cheaper)
  • You don't want a recurring monthly subscription

Verdict

      Veredicto

The best wearable for managing training load and recovery. If you train seriously, the $30/mo pays for itself by preventing overtraining.
